Papa Murphy's seeks franchisees across the US

Papa Murphy's, the fast-growing take ‘n’ bake pizza chain that was purchased for $180 million in April, is expanding across America. An e-mail deployed to the company’s database list invited customers to “get a slice of our success,” showing almost 30 Southern and Midwestern states as markets open for new franchise owners. Most of the Northwest is already under contract for new store development with existing franchisees. In fact, the only handful of states not open for development is the Northeastern tip of the United States.

Director of franchise sales Jim Werling said the chain has expansion plans in the hundreds for the next five years.

“We’re looking at about 125 store openings this year, and we’re hoping to sell about 150 stores through 2010,” he said. “Of course that will escalate next year to about 175 and the following year, 200, then incrementally about 50 stores on a five-year buildup, as far as number of stores being sold.”

The company's big expansion area right now is in the Southeast, especially the Carolinas, Florida, and Texas (Houston alone is about a 100-store market). Such areas are beneficial because they tend to have out-of-state residents who are already familiar with the take ‘n’ bake concept.
