PETA turns its focus to pizza industry

Domino's Pizza, Papa John's International and Little Caesars chains are now feeling the heat from the radical animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

No stranger to the restaurant business, PETA most recently waged negative PR campaigns against Burger King and Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers from its headquarters in Norfolk, Va. It now is demanding three of the world's largest pizza chains to develop animal welfare guidelines fitting with its own. (Pizza Hut is not being targeted because its parent company, Tricon, is already working to meet PETA guidelines.)

PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich claims the group wants to stop the mistreatment of animals whose byproducts are used in the pizza business. PETA is placing particular focus on pizza because of its heavy use of cheese made from the milk of dairy cows.

According to a report in Nations Restaurant News, Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Domino's believes its suppliers are PETA-standard compliant. Louisville, Ky. headquartered Papa John's International said it is moving in step with animal welfare guidelines being laid out by The National Council of Chain Restaurants and the Food Marketing Institute. Little Caesars in Detroit has advised its suppliers to meet the standards used by suppliers to Burger King.
