Lexington (Ky.) Herald Leader: Greg Rowe was a good worker who enjoyed his job delivering pizzas for Papa John's in London, Ky. On the evening of May 3, his shift was over and he could have gone home, but he decided to make two more deliveries.
The first took him to a motel. The second took him to his death, police said.
When Rowe arrived at a camper trailer to deliver two warm pizzas, an assailant bashed him in the head with a baseball bat, hitting him until the wood broke, and also might have hit him with a heavy piece of iron.
Rowe was killed instantly as a result of blunt trauma to the head, said Laurel County, Ky., coroner Doug Bowling.
"You know he never expected anything like that to happen. They just ambushed him," Bowling said.
Before the sun rose yesterday, police had arrested Christopher Neil Wages, 25, of Magoffin County, Ky., on charges of robbing and murdering Rowe, 36, of Rockcastle County, Ky.
The motive for killing Rowe was to take his money and his older-model Mitsubishi Eclipse, said Detective Johnny Phelps.
Papa John's and police did not say how much money was involved in the robbery, but delivery drivers don't typically carry more than $20. Rowe might have had a bit more because he'd made a delivery.
