Sale of TurboChef ovens to Subway hints at strong pizza sales

March 6, 2002

DALLAS -- TurboChef Technologies, Inc., announced it will sell 115 of its high-speed C-3 ovens to 100 Subway franchises in Puerto Rico. Additionally, Subway Island Development, the chain's Puerto Rican franchisee, has committed to an additional 71 units for future sites currently under development.

In a release, Mark Mirken, president of sales for TurboChef's commercial division, called the roll out "extremely significant."

Officials at both TurboChef and Subway remain tight-lipped about the results of Subway's pizza pilot, which began last year. After Subway saw positive sales of its 7-inch pizzas in a few U.S. markets, the pilot was extended to an estimated 30 markets, including some in Puerto Rico. The new order for ovens, it would seem, confirms that the extended pizza test has gone well.
