SAINT-LEONARD, Quebec -- Canadian dairy processing giant Saputo will close its Denmark, Wis., cheese-manufacturing plant by Oct. 1.

The plant's activities will be transferred to its Whitehall, Penn., facility. Thirty-five employees are affected by the decision, and all will be offered employment at other Saputo plants.

According to a release, the company is closing the facility to improve operational efficiency. The move will leave Saputo's U.S. Cheese Division with 14 plants and 1,800 employees.

Saputo is one of North America's largest cheese producers, and a manufacturer of mozzarella for the American and Canadian pizza industries.
