Sbarro comps off on mall traffic declines, strong dollar

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- Comparable-store sales at company-owned Sbarro Inc. restaurants declined 4.8 percent for the first quarter ended March 29, while comps at franchise locations were off 4.3 percent.
The decrease in comps reflects reduced mall traffic throughout the United States, Sbarro officials said.
International franchise comps were off 24.9 percent, of which half was attributable to the increase in the value of the U.S. dollar.
Revenues for the quarter were $79.6 million, off 4 percent compared with revenues of $83.2 million for the 2008 first quarter. The company recorded a net loss of $5.7 million compared with a net loss of $2.8 million for the same period last year.
