Teens suspected in pizza delivery driver murder

JACKSON, Miss. -- Two teenagers are suspects in the apparent holdup and fatal shooting of a pizza delivery driver on Feb. 24.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, DeMario Banyard, 13, was charged with murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Robin Ballard, a Domino's Pizza driver, Jackson Police Department spokesman Robert Graham said.

A second suspect, whose name was not released, was still at large.

Detectives believe Ballard delivered a pizza Monday evening to an apartment complex, returned to his car and started to drive off when two young men approached him.

"One of the individuals produced a weapon and shot him," Graham said. "He died at the scene as the result of a gunshot wound to the neck."

Ballard's fiancée, Memorie Mitchell, said she couldn't believe it when detectives came to her home to tell her what had happened.

"I asked them if they were joking, and then I cried," said Mitchell, who has two children ages 2 years and 18 months.

Ballard, who has a 3-year-old daughter, had worked at Domino's about two months, Mitchell said.

"I didn't like the places where he was delivering," she said. "I told him to be careful every night before he left."

Police officers were called to the apartment complex shortly after 6 p.m. when residents reported hearing a gunshot.

Banyard, who lives at Westwick Apartments, was arrested at the complex, Graham said.
