Tricon signs multi-brand partnership with two burger chains

Yorkshire Global Restaurants and Back Yard Burgers, Inc., have entered into development agreements with Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc.

David Novak, chairman and CEO of Louisville, Ky.-based Tricon, announced in December that the company would roll out 350 cobranded units this year, including both new and converted operations.

Yorkshire, based in Lexington, Ky., owns two chains: A&W All American Food (1,100 units) and Long John Silvers Fish & Chips (1,200 units). Neither company divulged how many outlets they plan to link. Currently, there are more than 100 KFC and A&W cobranded units throughout the U.S.

Tricon's deal with Back Yard Burgers, based in Memphis, Tenn., includes the establishment and operation of up to 10 Back Yard Burgers outlets as part of multi-brand units including Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and/or KFC operations.

Debut of those outlets is expected in 2003. The agreement also grants Tricon an option to co-brand up to 500 additional restaurants if the development schedule for first 10 is met.

Back Yard Burgers specializes in charbroiled Angus hamburgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as salads, milk shakes and fruit cobblers. Co-branded outlets will serve a more limited menu.

Back Yard Burgers includes 104 stores, including 37 company-operated stores and 67 franchised stores spread across 17 states.

Tricon accounts for more than 30,000 restaurants worldwide, and posted $22 billion in revenues in 2000.
