Unified Foodservice Purchasing Co-op buys Yum!'s equipment refurb division

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Unified Foodservice Purchasing Co-op LLC earlier this month acquired Yum! Brands Inc.'s equipment refurbishment division in Pensacola, Fla., according to a report in Louisville Business First.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Louisville-based Unified Foodservice is a purchasing cooperative that provides group purchasing of equipment, supplies and services. The company negotiates volume purchases of equipment, food, packaging and other supplies from manufacturers, suppliers and distributors.

Its membership comprises owners of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants in the United States. Yum! is the largest member of the cooperative.

The equipment refurbishment division has seven employees who rebuild and refurbish restaurant equipment for the three Yum! restaurant brands. The equipment is then resold to franchises and company-owned restaurants.

Unified Foodservice spokesperson Beth Haendiges said the service primarily is used by Yum! corporate stores but that Unified is hoping to make it more readily available to franchisees.

"The goal is to increase information and get word out to all franchisees," she said. "First we want to see if there is a demand and make sure we can meet it."
