Yum! Brands reports its social responsibility efforts

Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, A&W, Long John Silver’s and Pizza Hut, released its social responsibility report Wednesday, titled “Serving the World.”

The report outlines the work Yum! has done globally in the areas of environmental, social and economic impact. A similar report also was released in 2008.

The latest update highlights the Louisville, Ky.-based company’s World Hunger Relief efforts, which includes a record-breaking $25.5 million in donations to help the United Nations World Food Programme and other hunger relief agencies provide more than 98 million meals to those in need. The program has raised nearly $85 million in the past four years.

World Hunger Relief is the world’s largest private sector hunger relief effort, covering 110 countries and involving 37,000 Yum! Brands restaurants.

“It is unacceptable that nearly 1 billion people around the world are going to bed hungry every day,” said David Novak, chairman and CEO, Yum! Brands Inc. “In our quest to become ‘The Defining Global Company that Feeds the World,’ we believe it is both our privilege and responsibility to make a difference in the lives of people who are at risk of starvation around the globe.” 

Officials from the World Hunger Relief agency will determine specifics on how to best distribute those funds.

In addition to getting its employees involved in the efforts, Yum! also leveraged social media campaigns to reach millions of its customers for donations.

In the report, the company touted its increased use of recycled material in food packaging, reduction of energy consumption, reduction of sodium levels in menu items, and new models for sustainable restaurant design.
