Could backyard chefs with a hankering for the puffy crust and smoky flavor of brick-oven pizza soon be the pizza restaurateur's biggest competition?

Could backyard chefs with a hankering for the puffy crust and smoky flavor of brick-oven pizza soon be the pizza restaurateur's biggest competition? Nashville-based Tennessee Stone & Design hopes so. The company has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help put its modular and moveable brick-pizza oven into mass production. The oven, named Relic, can be quickly set up either on a flat outdoor surface or a 22-inch Weber grill, according to the company's press release.
The product allows backyard chefs and others to convert a table in the backyard, a round kettle grill or outdoor kitchen bay into a "fully functional, commercial-grade brick pizza oven." The release said this flagship product is portable, modular and made from "one-of-a-kind materials" by company craftsmen.
"After years of designing, testing, prototype-building and sleepless nights, we have our designs and manufacturing process to the point we are ready to move into higher volume production," said Tennessee Stone & Design founder and President B.T. Ulrich.
Ulrich said the company's kickstarter campaign was launched to take production to the next level by using the funds to install the manufacturing equipment needed to step up to larger volume production of the ovens.
The campaign runs until June 20, 2016 and even offers incentives, like giveaways and the opportunity to help design future products. (Pizza chefs: Are you listening?)
The company behind this venture also makes baking stones and says it has many other ideas similar to the Relic oven in development. Come to think of it, if you have any firefighter friends, might be wise to tip them off so they can prepare for what soon may be a steep increase in calls as our newly ordained pizza chefs take to the bricks.
