Beyond burger wars: Pizza Hut vs. Burger King in NBA Finals-inspired challenge

June 8, 2011

Burger King and Pizza Hut employees are paying particularly close attention to the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks.

Executives from Miami-based Burger King Corp. and Dallas-Fort Worth-based Pizza Hut have placed a high-stakes bet on the series, which is now even after game four.

Should the Mavericks win the NBA title, Burger King president Steve Wilborg will spend a day working in a Pizza Hut restaurant. If Miami's Heat pulls out the win, Brian Niccol, general manager of Pizza Hut U.S., will do the same at a Burger King.

The executive smack-talking is well underway.

"From our pizza to our prices, Pizza Hut is known for being unmatched," said Niccol. "That's why we decided to make an unmatched wager with our friends at Burger King Corp. We're glad to hear they've accepted. Wiborg better get ready for the heat of the Pizza Hut ovens. We are sizing up his apron now."

"We're confident Miami will flame-broil Dallas in the finals and bring home a Whopper of a victory," said Wilborg. "Niccol's Burger King crew gear is already washed and pressed and our teams here can't wait to help him sharpen his grilling skills by making 'America's Favorite Burger.' See you in Miami."

The NBA finals heads to Miami today for game five of the best-of-seven series. Game six will be played June 12 and, if necessary, game seven will be played June 14.
