Bill shielding quick-service restaurants from obesity suits passes Ohio committee

February 11, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio—A bill to protect quick-service restaurants from lawsuits filed by customers who claim those companies' products made them fat was unanimously approved by Ohio's House Civil and Commercial Law Committee on Feb. 11.

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, committee Chairman Bill Seitz said the bill is designed to protect companies from consumers' overindulgent behavior.

The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.

Under the proposed law, food suppliers still would be accountable if they promised their products would help customers lose weight but made them fatter, said Seitz (R-Green Township). They also would be responsible if their products included harmful ingredients or caused diseases such as food poisoning, he said.

"It's about striking the appropriate balance," Seitz said.
