Marin Independent Journal: The best pizza in America is served up at Mulberry Street Pizzeria in San Rafael, at least according to a panel of judges for a Food Network TV show dubbed "Challenge: Pizza Battle."
The contest was held in Cleveland in November, but it wasn't aired until March.
Judges in the two-phase contest gave top honors to a pie called "For the Love of Mushrooms" made by Ted Rowe, owner of Mulberry Street. Rowe's California cohort, Tony Gemignani, co-owner of Pyzano's Pizzeria in Castro Valley, took first place in the pizza acrobatics category. The pair split a $10,000 first prize, the largest-ever such award for a pizza contest, according to Rowe.
