Canadian Pizza Huts now buying only Canadian beef

August 7, 2003

TORONTO -- priszm brandz, a franchisee of 250 Pizza Hut restaurants in Canada, announced it is switching to using only 100 percent Canadian beef in all of its restaurants in Canada.

The move follows a temporary foodservice industry move away from Canadian beef after Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly called Mad Cow Disease, was discovered in one of the country's herds last spring.

"We are pleased to be supporting the Canadian beef industry during this devastating time," John Bitove Jr., priszm brandz chairman, said in a news release. "We have been working hard over the last few weeks to respond to this crisis and source sufficient Canadian beef to supply all our Pizza Huts across Canada."

From Aug. 11 through Sept. 14, 2003, priszm-owned restaurants in Alberta, Manitoba, the Atlantic region and Ontario also will donate 50 cents from every Pizza Hut Meat Lovers or Canadian pizza sold to the Canadian Cattlemen's Association Disaster Recovery Strategy.

"The outpouring of support we've received from Canadians across the country has been fantastic and beef producers are truly grateful," said Neil Jahnke, president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association. "Every sale of Canadian beef helps support rural communities across Canada."

priszm's Pizza Huts purchase close to 3 million pounds of beef products per year.
