Commodities update — Jan. 14, 2008

CHICAGO — The price of block cheese on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange averaged $1.97 per pound for the week ended Jan. 11, down more than 6 percent from an average of $2.10 the previous week. Cheese prices still were up more than 48 percent, however, from an average of $1.33 for the same week last year.
 
Prices had started the week above the $2 mark, but fell to $1.85 by Friday.
 
The nationwide average price for regular unleaded gasoline stood at $3.07 per gallon Jan. 14, up 2 percent from an average of $3 a month ago and up 37 percent from an average of $2.24 this time last year.
