Fox's firefighter fundraiser raises more than $18,000

October 9, 2007

PUNXUTAWNEY, Pa. — Fox's Pizza Den in Punxsutawney hosted its sixth annual "Pizza and Prevention" event Oct. 6, 2007.

The event, which began on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, began as a way to show appreciation for first responders and to promote disaster prevention in the area. Eventually, the date was set as the first Saturday in October, combining National Fire Prevention week and National Pizza Month while still acknowledging local hometown heroes and keeping the 9/11 theme alive.

Donations, tips to firemen/delivery drivers and the sale of nearly 1,800 Big Daddy pizzas raised more than $18,000 for the Punxsutawney Fire Department. To date, "Pizza and Prevention" has raised more than $68,000 and has equipped more than 2,000 homes with working smoke detectors, courtesy of Nationwide Insurance and the Kengersky Agency.

Fox's Pizza Den donates 100 percent of the purchase price of pizzas for the event.
