Frozen pizza maker, Amul, to open restaurants in Delhi

DELHI, India -- Amul, a food manufacturer from the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), announced it soon will open a restaurant in Delhi at the upcoming Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Known best for inexpensive heat-and-eat pizzas, Amul's restaurants will compete with multinational food chains like McDonald's and Domino's Pizza.

According to the Financial Times, GCMMF Delhi general manager RS Khanna said the cooperative has contracted to open five outlets at five of the six DMRC stations slated for construction.

Amul currently operates 18 restaurants in Ahmedabad and one on the Infosys' campus in Bangalore.

At DMRC, the restaurants will take up only 200 square feet and cost about Rs 10-15 lakh (U.S. $20,000 to $22,000).

Additionally, Amul will launch sales of its frozen pizzas in Delhi stores next week. So far, its frozen pizzas are sold in Mumbai only. Cost is Rs 20 (U.S. 40 cents) for a six-inch pizza and Rs 30 (U.S. 60 cents) for an eight-inch pizza.

Amul pizzas were introduced last year by GCMMF in order to increase mozzarella cheese consumption.
