PORTLAND, Ore. -- The city of Portland recently handed out its annual Business for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow awards, one of which went to Hot Lips Pizza.
According to the Portland Business Journal, the three-store chain was recognized specifically for its energy-efficiency efforts, which include the use of compact fluorescent lights, gas-sipping delivery vehicles and an innovative heat recovery system. The system captures exhaust from the ovens at Hot Lips' Capital Center store and reuses it to heat the restaurant's 120-gallon hot water tank.
Hot Lips owner David Yudkin claims his efforts have cut the company's energy consumption by half.
Yudkin is well known in the community for championing other environmentally sound causes, such as the use of organic food products and supporting local farmers.
