KFCH exec won't cut Shakey's ties, expected to step down

August 25, 2003

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- George Ting, the executive director of KFC Holdings, which franchises KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants in Malaysia and Singapore, likely will leave the company in September in order to avoid a board room struggle over his unwillingness to relinquish his financial stake in the rival Shakey's Pizza brand.

An unnamed associate of Ting's told The Singapore Times that Ting and KFCH's new management have failed to resolve the conflict of interest, and that Ting also is unhappy with KFCH's restructuring. Those company changes include the separation of the ownership of the KFC and Pizza Hut franchises and the company's poultry processing business.

The situation holds a bit of deja vu for Ting, who left KFC Malaysia -- KFCH's predecessor -- in 1997, over differences with another board director. He later returned to the board.

Ting's Shakey's ties are related only to the brand's stores in the Far East, and not to Shakey's Inc., in the U.S.
