Little Caesars' matriarch backs Indian casino

July 7, 2003

DETROIT -- Little Caesars' matriarch Marian Ilitch has formed an investment firm to financially back a $150 million Indian casino proposed in Barstow, Calif.

The Associated Press reported the move marks the third state in which Ilitch has gambling interests.

She helped spur Detroit's casino industry with a 25 percent stake in MotorCity Casino. The wife of Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch, she has lobbied to legalize casinos in Hawaii and has supported the Bay Mills Indian Community, which wants to build a gambling parlor in Port Huron, Mich.

BarWest Gaming LLC, a California-based investment firm, would develop the Barstow casino. The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians proposed the project. BarWest would own the management contract, allowing it to run day-to-day operations, according to the news service.
