Motorcycle pizza delivery driver accident injures toddler

June 22, 2003

LONDON -- The parents of Mia Bezani, a girl run over recently by a Pizza Hut motorcycle delivery driver, were shocked when the company offered free pizzas as compensation.

According to ThePeople.com, Neil Bezani, the girl's father, said he was surprised by the offer.

"I mean, is this the policy of Pizza Hut? Do you get free pizzas for five years if one of their delivery riders takes out someone's eye?" Bezani said. "Mia is a beautiful little girl who could have been killed. We are appalled by the callous attitude of such a large company."

Mia and her mother Jane were out when the delivery driver lost control of his motorcycle. The girl, who the report said was a toddler, suffered cuts and bruises to her arms and legs, and may be permanently scarred by an injury near one of her eyes.

"The rider stopped and told me his name was Ross, then rode off," Jane Bezani said.

After taking Mia to the hospital, the couple called the restaurant to report the incident. According to the report, the store manager offered to visit Neil, but "had the audacity to offer me free pizzas for two years as an apology."

Branch manager Noureddine Mahfouf declined to talk about his discussion with Bezani.

Sarah Vawser, spokeswoman for Pizza Hut UK, said the company was very concerned about the incident and is relieved that neither the mother nor her daughter were seriously hurt.

"We have investigated what happened and we are satisfied our company policy and procedures have been properly followed and that our driver was driving responsibly," Vawser said. "Whilst the investigation was under way, the customer accepted our goodwill gesture of two family meals."

Police also are investigating the incident.
