Nashville approves menu labeling; Congress takes up LEAN Act

March 8, 2009

The Tennessean: The Nashville Metro health board has adopted a menu labeling regulation that will require chains with 15 or more outlets nationwide to post calorie counts next to food items on menus. The requirement will go into effect March 31, 2010.

Restaurant industry officials said the Metro rules aren't necessary because Congress will take up a menu-labeling law, the Labeling Education and Nutrition Act, or LEAN Act, today. A bill introduced in the Tennessee legislature also requires menu labeling for chains with 20 or more outlets.
