HONOLULU—A Papa John's driver making a pizza delivery got sidetracked in a street race and wound up in jail on June 24.
According to the Star-Bulletin, delivery driver Shaun Peck, 18, and another vehicle driven by Ross Mukai, 18, allegedly passed a parked patrol car at 70 miles at 11:15 p.m. Police believe both drivers saw the officer but made no attempt to slow down.
"They were full-on, floorboard wailing it when they took off," said Maj. Doug Miller, of the HPD Traffic Division. "This was ... kind of an arrogant action, like in-your-face kind of a thing where they were thinking that the officer was on a traffic stop and perhaps unable to respond quick enough to get them."
Another officer in the area chased and caught both vehicles, which were slowed by other traffic. Both men were arrested and charged with racing, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail.
At the scene, Peck's vehicle still bore its Papa John's sign.
