NPC, Pizza Hut franchise group, posts Q3 loss

November 16, 2006

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — NPC International Inc., the world's largest Pizza Hut franchise group with 816 units, reported sales were up but profits were down for the third quarter ended Sept. 26, 2006.

According to a news release, sales for the period were $144.1 million, up $900,000 (0.6 percent) versus the comparable period in 2005. The company credited a 0.2 percent increase in comparable-store sales for the boost. Year to date, however, sales have slipped $2.9 million (0.6 percent) to $447.5 million because of a 0.5 percent decline in comps.

For the third quarter, the group reported a pre-tax loss of $3.3 million versus a $9 million loss in the comparable period.

"We were pleased that we were able to generate positive comparable-store sales during the quarter in a continued difficult operating environment," said Jim Schwartz, president and chief executive of NPC. "We continue to implement local marketing initiatives designed to increase sales and profitability. We are also excited about the acquisition of 39 stores in and around Nashville, Tenn., which will allow us to leverage our existing infrastructure."
