KINGSTON, England--The recent opening of a Pizza Organic restaurant here may signal a growing interest for organic foods in the UK.
According to the Richmond and Twickenham Times, the Chessington-based company now has 10 units and plans to open more. Ivan Taylor, 59, the company's managing director, also plans to convert his ordinary pizza restaurants to organic restaurants "because they are so successful." The report did not state the names of those pizzerias, nor say how many of them exist.
Success didn't come quickly for Taylor's organic pizzerias. Four years ago he opened seven of them, but response was lukewarm.
"People weren't quite ready for it, and it was difficult to get organic supplies on a regular basis," he said. "With the supermarkets now selling more organic food, there is professional distribution in the UK, and we also buy now from lots of local farmers."
The inspiration for organic pizza restaurants came from his wife, Sheila, a committed organic food eater. The couple doesn't seek to preach the healthful foods message to everyone, Taylor said, but they do want to meet the needs of diners who are seeking organic offerings.
"Most men don't care so much about organic food, but women have become more concerned in the past few years about health scares and what is in food," Taylor said. "We are also a third of the price of most organic restaurants. Our motto is 'affordable organics.' "
