PBS recognizes third grader for CiCi's Pizza story

May 22, 2007

COPPELL, Texas —  CiCi's Pizza announced that eight-year-old Oklahoma resident Hannah Carlson won first place for the third grade in a statewide PBS' "Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest." Her original story, accompanied by an illustration, was written about a pizza family living at CiCi's Pizza.

More than 350 writers and illustrators from kindergarten through third grade participated in PBS' first writing contest. Carlson is now entered into PBS' national writing competition.

Carlson selected CiCi's as a focal point in her story because her family participates in the restaurant's fundraising night hosted for her school, Cleveland Elementary School, every month. Her story features five family members representing different slices of pizza that are available on CiCi's buffet, including a spinach alfredo.

"Family night is an important part of CiCi's culture," said CiCi's Pizza president Craig Moore.  "It delights us that the Carlson family participates on a regular basis and that Hannah has used CiCi's as part of her saucy story for PBS – a company that shares our goal of bringing families together in a fun and entertaining environment."

All contest participants received a Certificate of Achievement signed by actor LeVar Burton, most notable for his role in Star Trek and host of Reading Rainbow. They were also recognized during a special ceremony at the Oklahoma State Capitol attended by teachers, classmates, parents, legislators and other special guests.
