Pesto pizza wins Texas contest

Houston Chronicle: Rome's Pizza of San Antonio won first prize in the July 22 Southwest Regional Pizza Championships.

I was one of the judges who spent all day sampling pizzas from dozens of Southwest Texas pizzerias. Every few minutes — bam! — there was another pizza for us to dig into. We weren't told where the pizzas were from. All we got was a description and a napkin. The weird part, at least for me, was ... these weren't ordinary pepperoni and mozzarella pies. Each restaurant submitted a "specialty" pizza, and they pushed the envelope pretty hard.
