Peter Piper Pizza's Slice of Knowledge Foundation will launch its annual fundraising campaign on March 30 to support the literacy nonprofit Read Better Be Better, according to a press release.

The campaign runs through April 26 at all Peter Piper Pizza locations in Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque. Customers can donate $2 at the register to receive five coupons for free 12-ounce ICEEs, or round up online orders to the nearest dollar. All proceeds benefit programs that pair younger students with older youth leaders to improve reading skills.

The initiative comes as data shows only 26% of Arizona fourth graders read at grade level. According to a 2025 study, third-grade students in the Read Better Be Better program scored 4.9 percentile points higher on state reading tests than those not enrolled.

"Our communities are full of potential, and we're proud to play a role in supporting the people and programs that help kids grow and thrive," Genaro Perez, chief marketing officer at Peter Piper Pizza, said in the press release. "Our restaurants are built around bringing families together, and that same spirit drives our commitment to giving back. Supporting initiatives that inspire learning and opportunity, like literacy, is a natural extension of who we are. Through the Slice of Knowledge Foundation, we're honored to partner with our communities in meaningful ways."

The program is designated as a Tier II evidence-based intervention under federal standards. Organizers noted that students who do not reach reading proficiency by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

"Literacy is the foundation for everything a child will accomplish in life, and in Arizona, the need has never been greater," Megan Jefferies, development director at Read Better Be Better, added in the press release. "Partnering with Peter Piper Pizza gives us the opportunity to reach more young readers and leaders across our communities, and we're grateful to have a partner that's as invested in Arizona's kids as we are."

Last year, the foundation's campaign raised $10,000 for Chicanos Por La Causa.

Peter Piper Pizza has more than 115 locations across the U.S. and Mexico. Check out our podcast with Genaro Perez HERE.
