Philadelphia pizzeria feeds homeless

January 19, 2015

Mason Wartman left his Wall Street career behind just over a year ago to sell pizza for $1 a slice, according to Reuters.

The 27-year old entrepreneur opened a Philadelphia pizzeria, Rosa's Pizza, in the Center City neighborhood, where he has served 8,500 slices to homeless people through the "pay it forward" philosophy.

"Pay it forward" involves passing along an act of kindness after receiving one. Customers began paying Wartman to hand out slices to the homeless at his store, where 30 to 40 come in each day for a slice. It all started in March 2014 when a customer paid for three slices for the next homeless person who walked in the door.

Wartman's handout slices account for 10 percent of his business, according to the article. Homeless guests have told Wartman his slices have kept them from committing petty crime for food.
