Pizza cones now selling in pizza's birthplace, Italy

April 15, 2004

MILAN, Italy—Pizza traditionalists are no more staunch than Italians, but it's here in the birthplace of pizza that an Italian man has put a new twist on the country's best-known dish.

According to a United Press International report, it's called the Kono Pizza, and was introduced at the Street Dining Design section in Milan's furniture fair on April 12. Essentially, the dish is small pizza served in a cone for easy handling and transport.

Rossano Boscolo, an Italian hotelier whose father had him rolling out pizza dough when he was a boy, created the Kono, and he anticipates opening about dozen shops in his homeland over the coming months.

A Margherita Kono is expected to be the mainstay offering, while Boscolo suggested several other varieties will be offered.

Sale price will be about $3.35.
