Pizza places gets some protection as Michigan bans obesity lawsuits

October 10, 2004

The Associated Press: LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Thursday signed a bill that bans civil lawsuits against restaurants and other sectors of the food industry for serving or making food that made people fat.

The new law prohibits a food manufacturer, packer, distributor, carrier, holder, seller, marketer or advertiser from being subject to civil liability for personal injury or death due to weight gain or an obesity-related condition.

It won't stop lawsuits filed for altering or misbranding food with malicious intent.
