According to the NPD Group, the fast casual segment has led the restaurant industry in both sales and unit growth, despite the economic downturn. Throughout the last three years, fast casual chains increased their unit counts by double digits. Many pizza chains are jumping into the segment, and touting their "fast casual" atmosphere as a differentiator. Some concepts embracing this niche include Fresco Wood Fired Italian Kitchen, Pie Five Pizza Co., Top That!, Go Roma and Zpizza.
