Plant-based protein meats saw a 56% growth in the pizza market during the second quarter of 2021, according to a press release from the NPD Group.
The NPD also found 20% of consumers want to increase the amount of plant based proteins they consume and that as a result shipments of plant-based chicken increased by 98%, Italian sausage by 72% and cauliflower dough and crusts by 46% in the second quarter,
"Plant-based is no longer just a niche player in the foodservice market. It's a mainstream ingredient that appeals to a broad section of consumers," Tim Fires, president of NPD's SupplyTrack service, said in the release. "It makes perfect sense that a popular food, like pizza, would now offer plant-based options."
