Sbarro posts 3Q loss despite 4.2% comps gain

November 21, 2005

MELVILLE, N.Y. — Sbarro's unit-sales increase this year hasn't helped the 961-unit mall-centered pizza and pasta chain make a profit through the third quarter of 2005.

According to a regulatory filing, comparable-store sales rose 4.2 percent for the 12 weeks ended Oct. 9, 2005. Revenue increased to $79.3 million versus $78.3 million last year, but the chain lost $323,000 in the period, down from about $1 million last year.

For the 40 weeks ended Oct. 9, revenues were $250.4 million compared to $247.2 million last year. Sbarro lost $9.4 million in the period versus $11.7 million last year.

The company said losses due to hurricane-related closures this year amounted to $228,000.
