Thirty-two eastern Pa. Pizza Huts to be closed or remodeled

PHILADELPHIA -- Fifteen unprofitable Pizza Huts in eastern Pennsylvania have been shuttered by the Dallas-based company.

According to The Phoenix, several stores are located in the Chester County towns of Thorndale, West Chester, Phoenixville, North Coventry, Exton and Kennett Square. The chain also will close three stores in Philadelphia and sites in Jenkintown, Willow Grove, Lansdale, Collegeville, King of Prussia and Flowertown.

The Phoenix report said all of the closed restaurants were owned by franchisee Vernon Duckery, and that none were profitable.

According to Pizza Hut spokesperson Patty Sullivan, the chain plans to purchase 17 other stores owned by Duckery in the Philadelphia area and modernize them.

The rebranding and modernization program includes making restaurants brighter and renovating interiors, Sullivan said.

"(The Philadelphia area) is an important market to us," she said. "We plan to upgrade and get the 17 (remaining restaurants) up to snuff."

Sullivan said Pizza Hut has no immediate plans to replace the stores it closed.

Employees of the closed stores, she added, can apply for work at other area Pizza Huts.
