October 5, 2005

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Three pizzerias took home five prizes in the third-annual Best Pizza on Long Island Festival and Bake-Off.

According to a news release, consumers chose the finalists by voting online at longisland.com. Representatives of the top-five vote-getting pizzerias in each category then came to Adventureland theme park for the final bake-off on Oct. 1. Winners of the event included:

  • Best Regular Pizza: Gigante's Pizza, Oceanside, N.Y.
  • Best Sicilian Pizza: Prince Umberto's, Franklin Square, N.Y.
  • Best Marinara Pizza: Gigante's Pizza
  • Best Grandma Pizza: Spassos Pizzeria, Wantagh, N.Y.
  • Best Specialty Pizza: Prince Umberto's

The entry from Spassos Pizza was chosen Best Overall pizza, which granted one of its pizza makers an expenses-paid trip to Salsamaggiore, Italy, to compete in the World Pizza Championships next March. The trip is sponsored by the World Pizza Champions team.

For Prince Umberto's top finish in two categories, one of its pizza makers will compete in the American Pizza Championship, to be held at the New York Pizza Show on Nov. 1-2. APC finalists include winners of various pizza contests held around the United States throughout the year. The winner of the APC will represent the U.S. in the America's Plate competition, also held at the NYPS. The America's Plate will feature entrants from several foreign countries.
