MELVILLE, N.Y. — Despite increases in comparable-store sales and revenue for the first half of 2005, Sbarro, a 957-unit quick-service pizza and Italian chain, posted a loss for the period.
According to a regulatory filing, a comp-sales increase of 4 percent drove revenue up slightly to $171.1 million for the 28 weeks ended July 17, versus $169 million for the same period in '04. Sbarro recorded a $9 million loss during the period versus a loss of $10.7 million last year.
For the 12 weeks ended July 17, a comp-store sales increase of 6.3 percent helped revenue rise slightly to $75 million versus $73 million in the comparable period. Still, the chain had a net loss of $3.3 million versus a loss of $4.6 million last year.
