October 20, 2002

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Police have filed charges against a Meadow Lands, Pa., woman accused of taking cash for pizza kits and then failing to deliver.

According to the Observer-Reporter, Billie Jo Smith, 34, was charged with six counts of attempted theft by deception and five counts of theft by deception.

Police said that Smith claimed to be selling the pizza kits as a fund-raiser for her nephew. She told prospective customers that he was a member of the West Greene High School football team and was raising money for a trip to Florida.

Smith went door-to-door and also approached motorists at a busy intersection, police said.

She is suspected of running a similar scam in the Claysville, Pa., area.
