New York City Domino's: We pay more

January 19, 2017 by S.A. Whitehead — Food Editor, Net World Media Group

At a time when the incoming administration in Washington shows little support for increasing the federal minimum wage or putting programs in place to assist American workers with health coverage, at least in New York City, Domino's is working in a near-opposite direction. According to a news release this morning, the chain is going to great lengths to distinguish itself for how well it pays its employees there.

The massive QSR pizza chain's company-owned stores in New York City are seeking to hire 200 new employees as delivery drivers, customer service reps and assistant managers. The company is pinning the announcement on the fact that the city's new minimum wage increase makes Domino's "among the highest-paying pizza delivery companies in New York City," the release said.

Domino's said its starting wage for delivery drivers in New York City is $12 an hour now, plus mileage reimbursement and tips. Assistant managers make $13.50 to $14.50 an hour with benefits, according to the release, which also disclosed that a whopping "90 percent" of Domino's franchise owners began their careers working in a store or as delivery drivers.

"Domino's is hiring and we pay more," Domino's Director of Corporate Operations in New York, Bob Machin, said simply in the release.

It's an approach to attracting employees that may be gaining popularity with restaurant brands as the overall industry continues to struggle mightily with attracting and retaining quality employees. For instance, earlier this week a feature shared on sister site, QSRweb.com, detailed a program launched by Taco Bell to become a top competitor for recruiting, engaging and retaining top-notch employees. Features include scholarship cash, career coaching and systemic nourishment of employees with leadership potential in-house.
