The Power of One Direction: one of the most important and underutilized factors of greatness

The "Power of One Direction" is a leadership discipline where Founders transition from keeping strategies in their heads to creating a written plan, providing the team with the clarity and alignment necessary to scale beyond the "stuck in the middle" phase.

I think the Power of One Direction is one of the most important and underutilized factors of greatness in Founder-led businesses. It is a true separator between those who stay stuck and those who grow.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been sharing the power of the Six Factors of Greatness and the building blocks that unstoppable, scalable, successful Founder-led businesses put into place as they grow their businesses.

We have been presenting the significance of each one of those factors of greatness, why they matter, the critical decisions that Founders have to make, so that they can unlock the power and the potential of that one factor of greatness, and the application and impact in their business.

Unlocking the Power of One Direction

One of the reasons why I think the Power of One Direction is so powerful is because it is centered on developing a written plan to be successful and scalable.

Many Founders will say they do not need a plan. They have that plan in their mind. They will figure it out. They know what they want to do.

  • The plan is not for the Founder.
  • The plan is for the Founder's leadership team to execute.
  • The plan allows the leadership team to take the Founder's vision and make it a reality.
  • The plan gives the team clarity so they can execute with excellence and achieve the results the business is working toward.

The real power of the Power of One Direction is getting the Founder to articulate what is in their mind into a written plan that the team can execute.

There is often a lot of pushback around planning.

  • Planning can feel like it takes time.
  • Planning can feel like something that does not always produce results.
  • Planning can feel like something that people do not follow or use.

When planning is done well and when it is aligned to a clear vision, mission, direction, and financial metrics, the written plan becomes one of the most powerful documents a company can have.

A written plan becomes the true roadmap for the business.

I always like to describe a written plan in a very simple way.

Unlocking the power of your team

When a Founder takes the time to develop a written plan, everything that lives in their mind begins to translate into clarity across the organization.

  • The leadership team aligns around what matters most.
  • Each leader understands their role.
  • Each function operates with focus.
  • The business begins to move forward with consistency.

This is where the Power of One Direction unlocks the potential and power of the business and the team leading it!

The Power of One Direction: Start with a one-page plan

As Founder-led businesses grow, there is a point where the company has vision, a leadership team, and opportunity. At the same time, the organization begins to feel the pressure of alignment. This is what we have been calling the "stuck in the middle." The company is working hard.

The team is engaged. The opportunity is real.

  • The written plan creates clarity for how the organization moves forward together.
  • It aligns the leadership team around shared priorities.
  • It connects vision to execution.
  • It allows the business to operate with rhythm, discipline, and consistency.

Plans don't need to be hundreds of pages long and take months to develop. If you have never done planning before, here are two "quick and easy" ways to start planning today

Step 1: Gain clarity — a strong written plan answers four essential questions:

  1. What are we trying to achieve?
  2. When will we achieve it?
  3. Who will drive the actions?
  4. How will we measure success?

Step 2: Develop your plan.

Three critical decisions that unlock the Power of One Direction

As a Founder continues to grow the business, direction becomes a leadership discipline grounded in clarity and commitment. The Power of One Direction becomes real when a Founder answers three critical questions with intention.

  1. Do you have a written annual and three-year plan your team can execute — or are you still making the plan? A written plan creates clarity across the organization and allows the leadership team to lead with confidence and alignment.
  2. Are you intentionally committed to a written plan, or changing direction whenever new opportunities appear? Commitment to the plan strengthens focus and allows the organization to build momentum over time.
  3. Can you stay disciplined long enough to let the team execute the plan — or do you step in and break execution? Consistent execution allows results to build and gives the leadership team the ability to deliver meaningful outcomes.

Commit to the power of a written plan for success

When a Founder commits to the Power of One Direction through a written plan, the organization gains the clarity, alignment, and discipline required to move forward with confidence and consistency. This is where companies accelerate through the stuck-in-the-middle and into sustained, scalable growth.
