Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza fundraiser wins with Twitter strategy
November 11, 2009
Popular pizza blog Worstpizza.com, South Florida's Sun Sentinel and Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza teamed up for a social-media charged fundraiser to benefit the Dan Marino foundation for special needs children Tuesday, according to the newspaper.
Advertising exec Michael LaMonica won the pie creation Tuesday night for his "Vegetarian Nightmare" strew with meatballs, sausage and pepperoni.
Part of his strategy for raising awareness about the event included a Twitter hashtag LaMonica created just for the contest: #teamlamonica. LaMonica participates in regular "Tweetups," in-person meetings of fellow Twitterers, with WorstPizza.com.
From the Sun Sentinel:
Pizza makers and their guests donated $5 each, which will be donated to The Dan Marino Foundation.
Almost 70 people sampled and then voted on five different pies. LaMonica, a mainstay of WorstPizza Tweetups, is by day senior vice president of business development at Beber Silverstin & Partners in Miami. He brought with him a throng of supporters wearing ‘Here's the Beef' T-shirts.
Michelangelo Mozzicato, the chef behind Anthony's 20 locations, conferred with each contestant to build their creation.
