RICHMOND, British Columbia—In what may be the longest pizza delivery in Canadian history, Boston Pizza embarked on a mission to deliver 2,200 pizzas 6,700 miles around the world to Kabul, Afghanistan.
According to a news release, the project started with e-mail correspondence between Michael Cyr, executive vice president at 160-restaurant Boston Pizza International Inc., and his brother, Cpl. Patrick Cyr, who is serving in Kabul.
Cpl. Cyr told his brother he missed good pizza while on active duty, and that got Michael Cyr thinking.
With the assistance of the Canadian Department of National Defence, 2,200 pizzas were delivered by military transport to Kabul, Afghanistan, at Camp Julien. The base accommodates the bulk of Canada's NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force and is home to roughly 1,600 Canadian soldiers.
On Oct. 31, a container filled with 2,200 frozen 12-inch pizza shells, pizza sauce and ingredients, was loaded onto a military plane at CFB Trenton, and arrived in Kabul on Nov. 2.
"This was truly a collaborative effort between our corporate staff and the military," said Mike Cyr. "We appreciate the opportunity to be able to provide all of the Canadian troops with a taste of home."
