After climbing steeply to a high of $1.75 per pound last week, block cheese prices dropped 4.25 cents in Jan. 28 trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Further, though slight, declines are possible, as cheese supplies appear stable nationwide, and strong milk production numbers are pressuring futures prices.
January '05's block prices will go down in the record books as the most expensive ever. Over the past 25 years, block prices have averaged about $1.25 per pound at this time of year.
At this same time last year, blocks traded at $1.31.
