Eco-Products is launching a new line of compostable plates, bowls and containers made from brown wheat straw, a line of dinnerware that "exudes green." The new line is made using Eco-Products' biopulping process to ensure the bowls, plates and containers are sturdy and durable, according to a company press release.

"This dinnerware has an undeniable green vibe. No one can mistake it for anything but environmentally friendly," said Wendell Simonson, vice president of marketing for Eco-Products. "Anyone can tell it's green."

The new line — made from wheat straw, a rapidly renewable resource — includes:

  • Plates and bowls — The plates come in an assortment of sizes, and the bowl holds 12 ounces. They are strong, microwave-friendly and hold both hot and cold foods. They're also freezer-safe and grease- and cut-resistant.
  • Clamshells — The clamshells are molded to be stackable, are microwave-friendly and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are also durable and made to carry hot and cold foods.
  • The dinnerware, made from 100-percent renewable and reclaimed resources, meets ASTM standards for compostability.

"You get style, substance and sustainability, all in one package," Simonson said.

Simonson expects it to be particularly popular with innovative start-up restaurants, which are increasingly using compostable products.

"The wheat straw gives this line a unique and undeniably green look," he said. "A growing number of restaurants is going green, and they want their customers to know it. And these plates, bowls and containers just exude green."
