Malawi's opens 5th location in Virginia

June 5, 2017

Malawi's Pizza is opening its first eastern seaboard location today in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a news release said. The chain has five locations but only sells franchises as development agreements. For instance, the Fredericksburg location is operated by the Church Restaurant Group, which has plans for four additional locations in the Northern Virginia area.

The new Virginia store is located at the Village of Spotsylvania Towne Centre. Under Malawi's "Pizza with a Purpose" initiative, the chain donates a nutrient-dense meal to a child in Malawi, Africa, for every meal purchased at a chain location. As of last month, the brand had donated 942,669 meals to the cause.

"Pizza with a Purpose is more than a marketing tactic, it is a serious corporate commitment to ‘pay it forward’ to those in need," CEO and Chef Kent Andersen, said in the release. "This program redefines 'voluntourism.' Customers can make a difference by eating at a local Malawi’s since every purchase supports kids in need and builds the local economy in Malawi by funding farmers and businesses that are providing meals to these children."
