Malware hackers pose as Pizza Hut

November 7, 2014

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning to consumers about Pizza Hut's 55th anniversary email, telling them to click the button for a free pizza coupon.

According to the FTC, however, the coupon link will actually install malware on your computer instead.

The organization said scammers create emails that appear as though they're from a legitimate company. The Pizza Hut scam email has plenty of red flags to alert the FTC and consumers, including:

  • The email may have gone to the junk folder
  • The sender’s email address isn’t a Pizza Hut address
  • The coupon link doesn’t show pizzahut.com
  • There is no information about a free pizza on PizzaHut.com
  • The company offered free pizza for its 55th anniversary last year
  • Also, companies will not send an email coupon if customers didn't opt in
