Minn. key to cracking salmonella source

Star Tribune (Minneapolis/St. Paul): While the FDA was focused on tomatoes and bogged down by its reliance on local health departments in its investigation, in less than two weeks Minnesota Department of Health investigators traced the source of a mysterious salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 1,200 people in 43 states and Canada.
 
The outbreak and the government's inability to find the source have exposed serious flaws in the U.S. food safety system, experts say.
