GREEN BAY, Wis.—Montforte Gorgonzola was honored with the prestigious Best of Class award at the 2006 World Championship Cheese Contest. According to a news release, the award-winning cheese is manufactured by farmer-owned Wisconsin Farmers Union Specialty Cheese Company.
"This award is an incredible honor for our cheese company," said WFUSCC president Sue Beitlich. "This competition, which occurs every other year and began in 1957, is considered the Olympics of cheese competitions. The 2006 contest attracted a record 1,793 entries from 18 countries."
Beitlich said Montforte cheesemaker Ed Goebel made the winning entry.
Montforte Gorgonzola is an Italian style veined cheese that has a mellow tangy flavor with soft green veining and a smooth, creamy body.
