Most pizza lovers are health-conscious female millennials
Young women love pizza, according to a study conducted by Smart Flour Foods, a creator of gluten-free foods and research firm, and the Center for Generational Kinetics recently released. The results of its national study, "Pizza Lovers in America 2015: Unexpected Findings From a Generational Look At Pizza Trends," designed to understand current consumer attitudes about pizza and uncover emerging trends across restaurants and retailers in the U.S.
"Understanding the makeup of today’s pizza lovers — in particular, the emergence of Millennials — will have a significant effect on every pizza retailer and restaurant. We are excited to deliver research findings that separate fact from fiction and give leaders the insight they need to make the most of changing pizza trends," said Jason Dorsey, co-author of the study said.
The study found that 35 percent of Americans go out for pizza and buy frozen pizza at the store every month, the release said. This group, coined "pizza lovers," consisted of 1,004 participants and revealed that the American pizza lover is different from popular perception. Of the subjects, 63 percent of pizza lovers in the U.S. are women and 41 percent of those women are Millennials.
The study also found that 68 percent of all pizza lovers exercise two or more times per week, indicating that the majority of pizza lovers are women who are young and health conscious, placing importance on natural ingredients and gluten-free options. The majority, 60 percent, avoid products with synthetic hormones, high fructose corn syrup, trans fat and artificial preservatives. Additionally, Millennials are driving pizza trends and inspiring new behaviors such as social sharing and using the Internet for pizza information.
